Polycount Commando – FPS Scene Optimizer for Blender

Optimize scenes as an FPS game: delete, decimate and downres

See all my Blender addons >

Your scene has 2 million triangles, 4K textures on a bolt nobody will ever see and a sculpt you forgot to decimate. Cleaning that up is the most boring job in 3D. Polycount Commando turns it into a first-person shooter.

Press Start Mission and you drop into your own scene, right where your viewport camera is. Walk around with WASD, look with the mouse and shoot whatever is too heavy. Every bullet really optimizes your scene, and a live polycount bar shows the triangles going down while you play.

Three weapons, always on screen

  • Decimator (key 2, the default): an assault rifle. Every bullet decimates the mesh it hits a little more, with a non-destructive Decimate modifier you can still tweak, apply or remove afterwards
  • Deleter (key 1): a heavy cannon. Whatever it hits shatters into pieces and is gone, with its unused mesh data purged
  • Downres (key 3): an energy pistol. Each shot steps the object's image textures down to the next power of two (4096 > 2048 > 1024) and lowers its Subdivision and Multires levels

It plays like a real shooter

  • Recoil, muzzle flash, tracers, screen shake, hit markers, floating "-3,968 tris" numbers and a combo meter
  • Aim down sights, magazines and reloads, sprint, jump and a jetpack to reach the tops of tall props
  • Sound effects for every weapon, hit, reload and footstep
  • A key guide with drawn key icons on screen, and the weapon bar always shows all three weapons
  • At the end you get a mission report and a rank: triangles before and after, texture pixels saved, accuracy and best combo

Safe to play in a real project

  • Objects you select before the mission are shielded: bullets bounce off them
  • Linked and library override objects are always shielded, and only meshes are hit unless you allow more
  • The whole mission is a single undo step: Ctrl+Z brings everything back
  • Decimates stay editable modifiers until you click Apply Decimates; textures can be restored from disk with one click
  • Your view, viewport layout and settings come back exactly as they were when you press Esc

Shoot the polycount down

Hold the trigger on a heavy sculpt and every bullet decimates it a little more. The triangle counter drops live.

Shoot the polycount down

Delete with a cannon

The Deleter shatters whatever it hits and removes it from the scene. Chain hits for a combo.

Downres textures in one shot

Each Downres shot steps the textures down a power of two and lowers subdivision levels: 1024 > 512 > 256 > 128.

Downres textures in one shot

A real mission, a real report

Switch weapons, jump with the jetpack, and press Esc for your rank: triangles saved, accuracy and best combo.

A real mission, a real report

Features

  • First-person optimization game inside the Blender 3D viewport, in any shading mode
  • Decimate, delete and downres weapons with tuning for keep per hit, minimum faces and minimum texture size
  • Live triangle counter, texture memory saved and a ranked mission report in the sidebar
  • Adjustable mouse sensitivity, field of view, run speed and eye height (works for tiny props and huge cities)
  • Apply Decimates, Undo Decimates and Restore Textures buttons after the mission
  • Works with any scene: game levels, archviz interiors, kitbash cities, photogrammetry and sculpts

Great for game artists getting a level under budget, archviz artists lightening a heavy interior, and anyone who wants to make scene cleanup the best part of the day.

Questions

Which Blender versions are supported?

Blender 4.2 and newer. It is tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS.

Is it safe to use on a real project?

Yes. Selected, linked and library override objects are shielded, the whole mission is one undo step, decimation stays an editable modifier until you apply it, and textures are only changed in memory until you save the images. Restore Textures from Disk reloads the originals.

Does it really optimize the scene or is it just a game?

It really optimizes it. The Decimator adds real Decimate modifiers, the Deleter removes objects and their unused mesh data, and Downres resizes the real image textures. The mission report shows the triangles and texture pixels you saved.

The view turns too fast or too slow. Can I change it?

Yes. Mouse Sensitivity is a slider right under the Start Mission button. The default is a typical shooter speed and is the same on Retina and regular displays.

Does it work in big or tiny scenes?

Yes. Set Eye Height and Run Speed in Controls: the jump, jetpack, weapon size and movement all scale with them, so you can walk through a city block or a tabletop diorama.

Which render engines does it work with?

The game runs in the 3D viewport in any shading mode: Solid, Material Preview or Rendered with EEVEE or Cycles.
