Faraway Mountains Generator
Auto-fit mountain ranges and fog around your scene horizon
Every scene has an edge. Faraway Mountains Generator closes it: one click measures your scene, finds its edges and builds layered mountain ranges all around the horizon, with mist between them and the air color taken from your sky.
It is made for archviz exteriors, street and city shots, game levels, product renders outdoors and animation sets: anywhere an empty grey horizon gives the render away.
Fits your scene by itself
- Reads every visible object and fits the ranges to the scene's real footprint: a long street gets long ranges along its sides, a round plaza gets a circle.
- Heights are set in degrees above the camera's eye line, so the mountains look right whether your scene is a 10 m garden or a 2 km city.
- Close the full 360 degree horizon, only what the camera sees (lighter), or a chosen compass arc.
- Flat land runs from your floor out to the foothills, with no holes beside narrow floors.
19 landscapes, on Earth and beyond
- Alpine, Himalayan, Rocky Mountains, Dolomites, Rolling Hills, Highlands, Forested Ridges, Desert Ranges, Mesas and Buttes, Badlands and Canyon, Volcanic, Karst Towers, Arctic and Sand Dunes.
- City lights at dusk: Hollywood Hills with homes twinkling up the slopes, and Desert City Lights, bare ranges around a valley full of lights like Las Vegas.
- Other worlds: rust-red Mars with layered mounds and crater rims, the grey cratered Moon under a black sky, and an Alien World of towering violet spires.
- Each one sets its own shape, rock, snow line, tree line, forest, haze and fog, based on how the real places look from far away.
Click a landscape
The real sidebar in Blender: click through the landscapes and the horizon changes from Alps to mesas, volcanoes, karst towers, arctic ice and beyond.
Mountains on every side
One click closes the whole horizon: turn around and the ranges are there in every direction, fitted to the scene.
Drag a slider, watch it rebuild
Drag Height from low hills to giant walls and back: the ranges rebuild live while you drag.
Mist between the ranges
Turn up the fog density and mist bands rise between the forested ridges.
Photoreal from afar
- Aerial perspective like real air: farther ranges fade into the sky color, and the air color is read from your world (color, Sky Texture or HDRI).
- Snow that sits on the summits and slides off steep faces, forest below the tree line, scree and eroded crests.
- Real aerial rock photos (Poly Haven, CC0) give the slopes their detail.
- Mist bands between the ranges, with density, height and color controls.
- City lights for any landscape: one slider fills the valley floor and low slopes with warm and cool home and street lights, with climb, brightness and warmth controls.
Light and fast
- About 80,000 vertices for three ranges at Medium detail, rebuilt in a fraction of a second, so sliders update live.
- Detail is spread evenly across the view, so far ranges cost no more than near ones. Low, Medium and High detail.
- Works in Cycles and EEVEE, and the meshes and materials are plain Blender data you can edit or export.
Easy to use
- A big picture of every landscape in the sidebar: click it, press Add, done.
- New Variation for another mountain range in the same style, Refit to Scene after you move things, Match Sky after you change the world.
- Rare options sit in folded panels: shape, snow and forest, fog, ground and detail.
Requires Blender 4.2 or newer. Tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS.
Install in under a minute (Blender 4.2+)
- In Blender open Edit › Preferences › Get Extensions.
- Open the arrow menu at the top right and choose Install from Disk.
- Pick the downloaded zip. Do not unzip it.
Questions
Which Blender versions are supported?
Blender 4.2 and newer. It is tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS.
Does it work with Cycles and EEVEE?
Yes. The mountains, haze and fog are normal meshes and node materials that render in both Cycles and EEVEE.
Will the mountains slow down my scene?
No. Three ranges at Medium detail are about 80,000 vertices and rebuild in a fraction of a second. Camera coverage builds only the part the camera sees, and Low detail is lighter still.
How does it know where my scene ends?
It measures the footprint of every visible object (or only the selected ones) and the camera position, then places the ranges a chosen distance beyond that edge in every direction. Press Refit to Scene after you change the scene.
Can I export the mountains to a game engine?
Yes. They are plain meshes with standard materials, so you can export them to FBX or glTF like any other object.
