Bonsaiwright – Bonsai Tree Generator for Blender

Bonsaiwright grows a complete bonsai display in Blender with one click: a trained tree, its pot, the soil, moss, stones and a wooden stand. Pick one of 60 designs from a picture gallery, or pick a style and a species and shape the tree yourself. Everything rebuilds live while you drag a slider.

The trees follow the real bonsai styles, so they look trained, not wild: tapering trunks with a wide root flare, branches wired down into flat foliage pads, and a domed apex. Leaves and bark are photo-scanned, the pots use a real ceramic shader, and the ground is photo textured.

Styles

• 18 classic styles: formal upright, informal upright, slanting, cascade, semi-cascade, literati, windswept, broom, twin trunk, clump, forest group, raft, root over rock, planted on rock, exposed root, driftwood, weeping and coiled
• Forest plantings with up to 15 trunks, rafts growing from a fallen trunk, and roots that clasp a rock

Species

• Juniper, Japanese black and white pine, spruce, Japanese and red maple, trident maple, Chinese elm, zelkova, ficus, satsuki azalea, boxwood, olive, cherry, plum, willow and bougainvillea
• Four seasons: fresh spring green, summer, red and gold autumn, and bare winter trees that show their fine twigs
• Azaleas, cherries, plums and bougainvillea in bloom, in any flower color

Deadwood and training

• Jin, apex jin and shari with a spiral, in bleached silver deadwood
• Copper or aluminium training wire coiled around the trunk and branches

Pots and display

• 15 pot shapes: rectangle, oval, round, square, hexagon, octagon, inverted corners, lotus, drum, literati bowl, nanban, cascade, semi-cascade, suiban tray and stone slab
• 15 glazes and bare clays, rims, feet, studs and an aged patina
• Akadama, dark soil, gravel, lava or sand top dressing, moss cushions, accent stones and pebbles
• Walnut slab, table stand, or a tall stand for cascades

Requires Blender 4.2 or newer. Tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS. Works in Cycles and EEVEE.
